Dr. Lautala is the Director of Rail Transportation Program (RTP), a position that he has held since October, 2007. In 2012, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He 

Pasi has his BS from Tampere University of Technology in Finland and his MSc. And Ph.D. degrees from Michigan Tech University. He leads and coordinates the overall development of the Rail Transportation Program and most rail-related education and research at MTU.

His previous experience includes work with Finnish Railways prior to his arrival in the US, as well as five years of railroad and highway-engineering consulting experience in Chicago before his return to Michigan Tech.

Dr. Lautala is also the Michigan Tech Principal Investigator for the National University Rail Transportation Center (NURail), funded by the US Department of Transportation, and also leads several other rail-related research and education projects. Dr. Lautala is also actively involved in the AREMA Education and Training Committee.
